Kingu is male in the original mythology but female in Spelunky 2 (probably so that all Tiamat's known children are daughters.) As in the mythology, Tiamat, the proper keeper of the Tablet of Destinies, gives it to Kingu, who wears it like armor and becomes super-powered. Perhaps Olmec is a corruption of "Olmite mech"? I also presume that Olmecs are one of the weapon models they made for that war. Since the Olmites are the ones trusted to hang out around Tiamat's Throne, I believe the war happened because the Aliens felt slighted that the Olmites were Tiamat's favored children. There was a First War between the Aliens and Olmites. Spelunky's Olmec appears to be made in their image. Spelunky 2 adds the Olmites, walking brain things with super-technology, as "Tiamat's secondborn". The Olmecs were the earliest known Mesoamerican civilization and are famous for their statues of heads, which Spelunky's Olmec is. Spelunky HD had an Alien Queen, who Spelunky 2 names as Lahamu probably because aliens come from the stars, making the Aliens "Tiamat's firstborn". Her first-born, Lahamu, was incorrectly identified in the 19th century as a star-goddess. Their spirits thereafter resided in Irkalla, the land of the dead.Īs in her original mythology, Tiamat is the mother of a ton of other gods or monsters. In fact, Kingu's blood was one of the ingredients to make humans. In the original mythology, Tiamat and Kingu died before humans existed. Not the same culture, literally opposite sides of the planet, often conflated anyway. Thanks to Tina, HD's Hell becomes 2's Eggplant World and Tide Pool - the former is where the Empress's grave is, and the latter is the bulk of her empire. In addition to King Yama, Hell also had an "Empress" who died before Spelunky HD and became The Ghost. This is a reference to Bananasaurus Rex, the first known player to do an "Eggplant run" in HD's single-player. It's canon that Tina hit King Yama with an Eggplant and turned him into Spelunky 2's Eggplant King. I have no clue why Spelunkers willfully go to Hell to fight him other than because they are jerks. ![]() He's responsible for judging the souls of Hell, who are dragged to him by Ox Head and Horse-Face, whose names are flipped in Spelunky probably as a joke on how this doesn't change the meaning at all. King Yama (also known as Emma or Yemma, yes the Dragon Ball "mahogany" guy is also him) is a Buddhist figure. ![]() In Spelunky, not only is Kali's sole purpose to encourage slaughter, but her statue clearly has a bigass tongue, as though demon-Kali is masquerading as goddess-Kali to build his/her cult. Kali is a rather respected Hindu goddess and a destroyer of evil, but there just so happens to be another Kali - a (male) demon known for his large tongue and penchant for slaughter. Spelunky, however, is a little smarter about it. Spelunky is partially an Indiana Jones parody, and Indiana Jones has a very unflattering depiction of Kali. I have no clue why the moon other than that the moon is important to many mythologies and the final part of the game is themed on becoming a constellation (a concept especially in Greek mythology.) The lore of Spelunky roughly matches the lore of the mythologies it features with a few caveats and a bit of cheek.
